Sonnet 2
Sal Lumen and Spiritus Mundi Philosophici: Sonnet 2
1621 Unnumbered sonnet leaf 2 · scans FR328This great body, the great God’s first creature, Was filled with a spirit from the beginning, Of every form in seeds, and living in movement, With which it animates all and brings all to light. It is the nourishing soul of earth and heavens, And likewise of everything living within them. In earth it is vapour, in Heaven properly fire, Triple in one substance and first matter. For from three and into three it proceeds through Nature, And becomes again every body whose balsam it contains, Having the sun and moon as its begetters. Through air it germinates below and seeks the heights; The earth nourishes it within her warm womb, And it is the common cause of perfections.
