If it is extracted from the bosom of its nursing mother, then purged of all accidental superfluities and prepared according to art, what will prevent it from separating from the bodies to which it is administered the corrupting things unlike itself, and from preserving and multiplying what conforms to it? For all celestial forces and worldly powers concur together within it. It is certain that, when poorly interpreted, the authors all seem to command or advise the use of metals alone to make metals, saying that the seeds of gold are in gold alone: a judgement, indeed a verdict without appeal. But besides what I have just said about the difference between ordinary metals and those they intend to be taken for their magistery, I shall venture to affirm that without this general spirit, the sole cause of growth in all things, the faculty of making gold or silver which exists in these metallic bodies, ordinary as well as secret and hidden, could neither grow nor pass from potentiality into effect. For nature does not produce itself, and every operation requires an agent and matter capable of receiving its action. This is the fire of which Pontanus speaks, which all the sages have concealed as the sole key to their secrets, and without which he failed two hundred times, he says, in operating upon the true matter.
