The poets have depicted this in fable through the figure of changeable Proteus, who transformed himself into various monstrous shapes to terrify and turn aside those who tried to capture him. Now this variety of colours is caused by internal sulphur, the true author and producer of all the tinctures and varied markings seen through Nature and art in all the things of the world. They can be distinctly observed in the decoction of this first universal subject, just as it once produced them for me, as I have already said. But as soon as whiteness appears, the sulphur of Nature also appears, which Geber says is white outside and red within. For this whiteness is finally followed by redness, with no other aid than fire continued and increased by degrees. This led one of the sages to say that their stone at the white stage was a gold ring covered in silver. I have willingly said these few words in passing about the colours indicated in all the good authors, not presuming to teach here the preparations and operations which I well know are necessary to accomplish their great Elixir, so exalted and highly praised by them, but solely to enable the inquisitive disciples of learned Medea, who through careful, profound inquiry endeavour to enter the sanctuary of mysterious natural philosophy, to recognise which sulphurs in all things must be removed or preserved. I believe the time I steal from the household affairs to which I am bound will have been employed worthily enough if I can restore some vigour and spark of life to this languishing part of natural philosophy. Those who envy its glory have buried it alive in the tomb of calumny under the odious name of fraudulent transmutation and falsification of metals. Yet only ignorance of the true mystery prevents them from making the distinction and gives scope to their slander. Its entire foundation rests maliciously upon the effrontery of certain swindlers, wanderers and sellers of smoke, who veil and cover their shameless, unchaste adulteration with this fair virgin’s sacred mantle. With its paint they enchant the eyes of the credulous and, like treacherous Sirens, plunge the inquisitive into Charybdis and Scylla.
