But Nature has established this necessary law: that what partakes more of body should dwell around what is more corporeal, and what is more corruptible and defiled around what resembles it. Earth is the lowest of all bodies, and therefore the coarsest and most corruptible. Nothing can issue from it that does not resemble it, unless the art of separation intervenes to remove this corruption and impurity, drawing out the pure substance present in bodies, which the true Philosopher can do with skill. I have no intention, and never shall have, of offending physicians; on the contrary, I honour them as is commanded. But, with many learned people, I marvel how little care they take to lead apothecaries towards more useful diligence in preparing their medicines, since they are so often disappointed in the hoped-for success of their ordinary procedure. For they seek to heal and restore sick and weakened bodies by brewing quantities of drinks containing so many impure and coarse dregs that the little substance in which the helping power resides is submerged in poison and has no power to act against the disease; nor can Nature assist it in this action, because in this conflict she herself is afflicted as much or more by the remedy’s impurity than by the disease. This is therefore an attempt to fight corruption with corrupted and corrupting weapons, which I consider impossible. For, as Petrarch said, rivers have never been dried up by rain, nor fire extinguished by flames. The corruptible added to the corruptible increases corruption.
