1621 pp. 68–70 · scans FR088, FR089, FR090When I say, therefore, that fire is the principle of things, I shall depart from neither reason nor truth. For it is undoubtedly their first craftsman and the final destroyer and changer of the forms it has caused, until it has reduced things to their appointed term and matter, beyond which there is no further progression, but transformation. I shall shortly make this clear by comparison with visible and familiar things. The first active power operating in the production of a human being is the stirring or movement of heat. Imitating the action of fire, whose nature is chiefly to separate, heat draws from the whole body what is called seed-fluid, in which the human seed is contained potentially, and cooks and digests it to make it fit for expulsion, then for the generation or complete growth of the whole human being. This generation and growth are always aided and guided by fire, the sole operator, until, reaching the limit of its exaltation and overinflamed by the sulphur of the excrements proceeding from impure foods, it dries up the radical moisture which is the seat and preserver of life. Once this is done, the same fire does not cease its action until it has turned bodies into ash through dissolution and corruption, which it alone can accomplish.
