Latin

Porro in transmutationibus Gemmarum sciendum est mundum situm esse in duobus gradibus tincturae & coagulationis. Nam sicut albumen ovi croco tingi, & postea coagulari potest in pulcrum flavum succinum: fuligine pini in nigrum succinum: viridi aeris in viride succinum, simili lapidi cyaneo vel Turcico: viridi succo in simile smaragdo: lazurio in succinum coeruleum, simile sapphyro: ligno praesiliae in rubrum succinum, granato vel rubino simile: purpureo colore amethysto simile: cerussa alabastro simile: Ita alii quoque liquores omnes & praecipue metalla & mineralia fixis coloribus tingi, & postmodum coagulari, & in gemmas transmutari possunt.

English

In the transmutation of gems, understand that the world is situated in the two stages of tincture and coagulation. Egg white can be tinged with saffron and coagulated into beautiful yellow amber; with pine soot into black amber; with verdigris into green amber like a blue stone or turquoise; with green juice into something like emerald; with lazurium into blue amber like sapphire; with brazilwood into red amber like garnet or ruby; with purple colour into something like amethyst; with ceruse into something like alabaster. In the same way all other liquors, especially metals and minerals, can be tinged with fixed colours, subsequently coagulated and transmuted into gems.

About This Reading Edition

The complete supplied Latin–English edition of the historical title, dedication and all nine books, with 363 separately labelled historical marginal notes, 117 modern annotations and the complete Diotimos study apparatus. The transmitted composite work is traditionally attributed to Paracelsus; individual authorship remains qualified.

Historical Text and Translation

The normalized Latin follows the complete 1605 Frankfurt Palthenian witness, volume six, printed pages 198–271, in SUB Göttingen PPN578052199, historical scans 182–255. Earlier textual tradition is German; the individual translator of the 1605 Latin text is not identified. The dedication’s 1537 date is transmitted text, not an established date for the composite work.
