A horse’s teeth, and so forth.
The same signator marks a stag’s antlers with branches from which its age is known: the stag is as many years old as the antler has branches. Since one new branch is added each year, its age can be recognised up to twenty or thirty years. The signator also marks a cow’s horns with rings, from which the number of calves she has carried is known, each ring indicating one calf. The same signator pushes out a horse’s first teeth so that its age can be known certainly from them in its first seven years. Fourteen teeth first grow in a newborn horse, of which it loses two each year, so that all fall out over seven years. For this reason a horse older than seven can be judged only by someone highly skilled and practised.
The beak and claws of a bird, and so forth.
The same signator marks a bird’s beak and claws with particular signs from which any experienced fowler can assess its years and age. He marks the tongues of sick pigs with eruptions which disclose their impurity: as the tongue is impure, so is the whole body. He marks clouds with distinct colours from which the weather can be foreknown, and likewise the Moon’s halo with colours, each having its own interpretation. Redness generally indicates coming wind; greenness and blackness, rain; and these two mixed, wind with rain, a sign at sea generally portending fierce storms and tempests. Brightness and shining whiteness are a good sign, especially on the ocean, generally foretelling calm, quiet and clear weather. Whatever the Moon thus portends through its signs will happen on the following day.
The kinds of magical astronomy.
Let this suffice for what has been taught about natural signs. Supernatural signs require a special knowledge and experience, such as magical astronomy and similar sciences. Here one must acquire certain knowledge of them. Many other arts arise from this, such as geomancy, pyromancy, hydromancy, chaomancy and necromancy. Each has its own particular stars, which sign in a supernatural manner. Know that the stars of geomancy sign or impress their marks on earthly bodies throughout the world in many different ways. They change the earth, produce earthquakes and chasms, generate hills and valleys, bring forth many new growths and produce gamahei with plain figures and images possessing notable forces and powers. These they receive from the seven planets as a target receives a bullet or missile from a shooter. To recognise separately the signs and images of gamahei and know what they signify magically requires great experience and knowledge of the nature of things, which cannot be taught completely here.
The source and nature of the power of gamahei.
Observe carefully that each stone or gamaheus can possess the property and virtue of only one planet, and therefore be endowed by only one. Although two or more planets may join in earthly bodies as in the upper firmament, one is nevertheless overcome by another. Just as one house cannot bear two masters, but one drives the other out, so here: one remains master, the other serves. Or as someone arriving by force ejects the keeper of a house, makes himself master and orders everything according to his pleasure while reducing the other to servitude, so one star expels another, one planet another, one ascendant another, one influence another, one impression another and one element another. As water extinguishes fire, one planet destroys another’s property and introduces its own. The same must be understood of their signs, which are manifold: not characters alone, as many suppose, but everything found in the whole map of the planets, that is, whatever is related and subject to those planets.
Things subject to the Sun.
To the Moon.
To Mars.
To Mercury.
