Questions for Study
What Is Vaughan Defending?
How does the opening definition restrict the meaning of magic? Which practices or assumptions does he exclude, and which commitments does he ask the reader to accept? Begin with the definition and the distinction from charms.
Where Does an Inference Begin?
Find a place where Vaughan distinguishes explicit scriptural testimony from probable reasoning. How does that admission affect the larger claim about Adam’s knowledge? Compare his qualification with the argument from divine care.
What Can a Sign Do?
What relation allows water, salt, oil or light to function as more than an empty name? How does Vaughan avoid giving arbitrary human words unlimited power? Compare the material signs and letters and substantial reality.
Whose Tradition Is Being Described?
What happens when Vaughan interprets Malcuth, the tree and the Three Mothers within his Christian argument? What can this volume establish about his reception, and what would require a separate history of Jewish traditions? Read the Fall account and name and thing.
How Strong Is Reported Evidence?
Choose the Chinese monument, the book described by Flamel or the Aristotle anecdote. Separate report, quotation, interpretation and conjecture. Start with the monument, the described book or the qualified anecdote.
What Corrects Confidence?
How does Vaughan’s account of failed practice qualify his criticism of the schools? What would a reader need to know in order to judge his appeal to experience? Compare the limits of merely reading and the failed expectation.
What Does Secrecy Permit a Reader to Assess?
Does the oath strengthen the moral seriousness of the art, limit the evidence which the book can offer, or do both? Keep the historical refusal intact while considering its consequences. Read the oath and the refusal to publish indiscriminately.
How Do the Poems Argue?
Compare the unseen treasures of Cynthia in P. B.’s poem with the close looking demanded by Hyanthe’s appearance. How do images of visibility, influence and attention contribute to the prose arguments?
Where Do Material and Spiritual Readings Meet?
Identify a passage where Vaughan himself connects generation with renewal, then one where he distinguishes a particular material from ordinary substitutes. How can an interpretation preserve both claims? Compare generation and regeneration and the exclusions.
Why End by Addressing a Book?
How does the final poem return to the opening concern with rank, judgement and readers? Compare the dedication’s refusal of greatness, the public reception and the closing poem.
