Reflective possibility: The passage can suggest attention to a thing’s capacities and limits rather than the imposition of a desired result. Patience is then an active manner of working. This application preserves the relation between affection and conditions without pretending that the physical claims are only metaphors.

The Measure of Cooperation
“Neither kitchen fire nor fever works upon the sperm in the womb, but a thoroughly temperate, moist, natural heat proceeding from the mother’s own life.” — source p. 120.
Source forms: heat, Generation.
The comparison with gestation qualifies what fire means in the art. Vaughan distinguishes a generative heat from the cook’s fire and from fever. Read in the whole publication, the sentence continues a concern with creation’s existing powers rather than the mere application of force. It does not provide a numerical temperature or identify an ordinary material as first matter.
Reflective possibility: A reflective reader may examine the difference between intensity and fitness. More effort or pressure need not improve a process whose development depends on proportion. The image offers a question about conditions, rather than a guarantee that gentleness by itself will produce transformation.

A Bond Between Contraries
“Thus air’s mediation makes friends of the other two extremes, fire and water, and reconciles them.” — source p. 133.
Source forms: Mediator, Unitie.
Air shares heat with fire and moisture with water in the elemental model Vaughan uses. Its mediation explains a partial reconciliation; the next passage requires a stronger bond in the spirit of God. In the full volume, this sequence joins natural relations to the divine agency invoked from the opening definition of magic.
Reflective possibility: A reflective application can look for a real shared quality through which opposing positions meet. It can also ask how durable that agreement is. Vaughan’s distinction between partial friendship and a stronger bond prevents mediation from becoming a claim that every conflict is already resolved.
