p. 116

Sulphur, Sal vnd Mercurius. lin. 18. — Line 18 as printed reads Sulphur vnd Sal, Mercurius. The corrected order is adopted. It restores the canonical order of the tria prima, on which the objection being reported turns.

p. 129

Das gleich SIE das ausserwehl-te. lin. 16. — Line 16 as printed ends das gleich SIE für, and line 17 begins das ausserwehlte. The entry gives the corrected line, broken at the place the corrected setting would break it, and the correction is the deletion of für: without it sein solle vnd sey has nothing to govern. Adopted and marked.

p. 132

familiarem / für familiaren / lin. 21. — Line 21 as printed reads familiaren notitiam habui. Corrected to familiarem; adopted. The line is part of Khunrath’s Latin quotation from Bernard of Treviso, and the correction restores the accusative the noun requires.

About This Reading Edition

Heinrich Khunrath’s Magnesia Catholica Philosophorum argues that alchemy has one universal subject, that this subject cannot be extracted from the metals, and that nothing in the work can begin without recognizing it. This complete reader begins with the supplied seven-part introduction and orientation, then presents every printed page of the 1599 German treatise opposite its new English translation.

Historical Text and Translation

The German reading text is a fresh diplomatic transcription from 600 dpi images of the Magdeburg copy printed by Johann Bötcher in 1599. It preserves Khunrath’s capitalization, word division, authorial marginal keys, glosses, errata, and three unnumbered closing pages: the errata leaf, owl emblem, and colophon.
