-held: whom thou, through Nature, hast prepared before all Peoples; a supernatural Light, Naturally and in a Nature-conforming, artful way to enlighten those that go astray and are unwise in the physical and hyperphysical — that is, the Theosophical — Mysteries; and a Praise of thy People, of those who hold the Works of the LORD in NATURE in high account — yea, who persistently hold them high, and have their Heart’s delight therein, with a true Theosophical setting-aside of all the perishable and luxurious Vanities of this World.

Thou mocking-bird and Devil’s magpie†, take also to heart what follows. Although the Patriarch Simeon had as yet seen the Child IHSVH Christ do no miracle at all, yet nevertheless he knew, by the inspiration of the holy Ghost, the Biblical scripture

About This Reading Edition

Heinrich Khunrath’s Magnesia Catholica Philosophorum argues that alchemy has one universal subject, that this subject cannot be extracted from the metals, and that nothing in the work can begin without recognizing it. This complete reader begins with the supplied seven-part introduction and orientation, then presents every printed page of the 1599 German treatise opposite its new English translation.

Historical Text and Translation

The German reading text is a fresh diplomatic transcription from 600 dpi images of the Magdeburg copy printed by Johann Bötcher in 1599. It preserves Khunrath’s capitalization, word division, authorial marginal keys, glosses, errata, and three unnumbered closing pages: the errata leaf, owl emblem, and colophon.
