— Comparable to those white waxes that burn only for the altar [and] illuminate only palaces. He had their dryness, but a flexible [dryness]; and he had their purity.

A submission offered, a submission promised, a submission [sworn], a submission that in any case was owed and inevitable, seemed an [act] of heroism. A prince seemed to them exiled or banished to his [palace], a bishop to his diocese, a poet far from court. They pity [the] pontifical hands because they could no longer touch the [scepter] and because they held the censer.

A king who did not appreciate this mind appears to them an unjust monarch [and] almost an oppressive monarch. Cooled enthusiasm [seems] to them treachery; restrained partiality, a cowardly and shameful [abandonment]; loss of favor, an excessive persecution: as [if] this pious soul had been capable of saying:

Then I shall no longer be able to be seen except by God. (Boileau.)

This very ordinary occurrence, of two merits failing to recognize each other, [is] regarded here as a monstrous event, through [false] respect and false piety toward a false misfortune.

About This Reading Edition

Joubert’s notebooks return to the work of thinking and writing, the demands of friendship, and questions of faith, beauty and conduct. This edition pairs the French with a new English translation, preserving the order of the chosen source and the unfinished character of its fragments. Dates and source references allow readers to follow a thought through time or return to its printed context.

Historical Text and Translation

The French text follows André Beaunier’s 1938 edition of Les Carnets de Joseph Joubert, published by Gallimard from Joubert’s autograph manuscripts. Volume II continues the notebooks and includes seventy undated pieces. French and English are aligned paragraph by paragraph, retaining the source order, printed dates and page references so readers can return to the facsimile.

Translator’s notes clarify wording, references and uncertain readings: Essential keeps notes that help explain a passage, while All includes technical detail.
