T15. The initial reversal and full succession of perceptible/abstract, apparent/hidden, imaginable/intelligible and attention remain. Perceptible renders sensible without the false-friend meaning reasonable. If possible and merely retain their limits. The final and supplies ordinary English list coordination without adding a source proposition.
T135. The first negation and opposing mais , repeated rendre and abstrait/sensible reversal remain. The optional s’il se peut , restrictive n’est que and final enfin are retained. Intel-/ligible is a complete wrap; no missing word or connective is supplied in the French source.
T16. The nominal opening, daring, obligation and not-only/but distinction remain. Its refers contextually to faith, preserving acts and habits without defining a new ecclesiastical requirement.
T136. The nominal Foi , purpose infinitive, en relation and non seulement...mais comparison remain.
T17. The name, two very terms, occupied past tense, both ellipses and unfinished participle remain. The source’s finite/participial mismatch is not smoothed into a completed narrative.
T137. The complete 13 remains. Both très terms, two nominal fragments, imperfect occupoit , both printed ellipses and the anomalously coordinated allant phrase remain. The pla-/cée wrap is complete; no finite verb is supplied to the participial phrase.
T18. The two separately bounded quotations, singular public carrying both adjectival descriptions and two restrictions remain. Votes renders suffrages with both literal voting and evaluative approval possible; judgments make law retains the source’s authority metaphor. Bonnald is retained as printed, without identifying or correcting a person. Mr. ordinarily renders the raised source abbreviation. The complete 1798 Académie entry supports both votes and evaluative approval.
T19. The nominal opening, obligation, both unusual parentheses and two reasons remain. Habitation leaves the source’s inhabiting/dwelling formulation visible without asserting that stars actually have inhabitants; the following paragraph develops that speculation.
T20. The interrupted if/but construction, some/none distinction and printed [avec] bracket remain. The last occupy/unoccupy deliberately preserves the source’s occuper/désoccuper wordplay rather than silently losing one side. The unusual English is a deliberate counterpart to the source’s wordplay; the complete 1798 Académie entry supports freeing oneself from what occupied one, here withdrawing attention from duties. No astronomical proposition is supplied beyond the source.
T21. The opening fragment, true/not-true reversal and parenthetic test remain. The parenthesis freshly renders à l’épreuve contextually; it is not a claim of a known experiment.
T140. The complete 18 remains. The nominal De opening, repeated vrai , negative second predicate and closing parenthesis remain. The terminal period is outside the parenthesis. The source collation records the 860 étenduë upper pair, Port Royal punctuation, Nota boundary, raised-r Bonnald, printed [avec] and complete right-edge forms, with the individual reading qualifications retained.
T22. The nominal opposition and all three parenthetic domains remain; no argument is supplied to complete the fragment.
T141. The complete 22 is supported despite softened color contours: both curved heads, transitions and lower feet remain identifiable. The opening prepositional fragment and three parenthetic domains remain; no verb is supplied.
T23. The repeated strength, soul/mind distinction, plural bodily comparison and often remain. A trifle keeps the contrast between strength and un rien , without supplying a cause of collapse.
T142. The two singular force phrases, plural comparison, colon, feminine plural pronoun and souvent/un rien remain. Abbat has doubled b . The left start elles is softened but identifiable in color.
T24. The article stays outside the quotation, and the attribution remains within the same paragraph. Fabricators retains the making-and-falseness association; no Dussault text is independently identified.
T143. The complete 27 remains. The two upper e components in poësie are distinct in color. In the French source, the quotation closes before its period; the attribution has its period inside the parenthesis. No complete main predicate or external wording is substituted.
S1. Source editor’s annotation What follows (dated April 2 and April 3) comes not from the notebook but from a leaf (which bears the words “2nd sheet”; and, unfortunately, I do not have the first sheet), dated “April 2” on the recto and “April 3” on the verso. No indication of a year. I choose the year 1817 (with more probability than certainty), because of the resemblance between the lines devoted to childhood memories in this passage and in the notebook, close by, on March 12: not only is the thought the same, the words are the same. I add that between March 27 and April 3 there are only two blank pages in the notebook: Joubert, no doubt, did not have his notebook at hand and used a leaf. Then, that same April 3, he returns to his notebook; and there he concerns himself with Voltaire. Thus he was thinking about Voltaire on that April 3, 1817; and this explains why he mentions Voltaire specifically (in an unexpected way) in connection with this influence of piety on poetry.
T25. The dependent For, both perhaps terms, even and at-least qualification remain. Old/new/future subjects retain old/recent/unheard-of styles. The separate date-owned note explains the source editor’s qualified year assignment.
T30. The full source editor’s first-person reasoning, absence of a printed year, probability/certainty qualification and later no-doubt inference remain within one separate apparatus paragraph. All source dates and recto/verso positions remain; they do not become additional entries. Certainty takes évidence as evidential assurance here, not a claim that the year has been proved. Returns preserves the source editor’s historical present retourne , alongside the following present concerns.
T144. The complete 2 remains. The raised 1 follows avril before the date’s baseline period. Source annotation 1 explicitly gives the separate sheet no written year and selects 1817 by analogy; that qualified provenance applies to the April 2/3 sheet material, not an independently printed year. The two peut-être forms, même , alternative ou du moins and permitted/prescribed/fitting distinctions remain. The first occurrence is literal stile , the next two style . Ancien-/nes is a complete wrap, and inouï has two distinct upper i components. The lower starts moins/nes/style retain identifiable color contours.
T145. One complete roman editorial paragraph remains separate from the main text. The e after 2 in the quoted sheet designation is raised, not a baseline letter. Recto/verso dates, the missing first sheet, both parenthetic qualifications and the explicit lack of a year remain. The editor’s comparison-based selection of 1817, plus de vraisemblance que d’évidence , sans doute and first-person reasoning are retained as his qualified claims. March 12/27, the repeated April 3 references and 1817 do not create new main dates or prove an autograph year. N’avait/songeait use their printed modern ai endings; poésie here has an acute e rather than the main text’s diaeresis. The malheu-/reusement and vrai-/semblance wraps are complete.
S2. Source editor’s annotation A few more words can still be read: “had influence on...” But the leaf is torn.
T26. The past arrest and present restoration, unnamed one/other, physical course and too-long loss remain. Extra torn-sheet words in the source note are not silently added here.
T31. The fragment, ellipsis and source-editor account of damage remain separate from the complete main paragraph; no missing subject or object is supplied.
T146. The two simple-past verbs arrêta/suspendit , present rend and pluperfect avoit perdu remain distinct. Trop longtemps and the unspecified l’un/l’autre are not normalized or identified. The raised 2 follows perdu before the baseline period, as directly shown by color/native 393; the map’s provisional after-perdu . wording is not used. Source note 2’s torn-sheet words remain apparatus only.
