Perfectibilité. — Que M. de B[onald] lui-même prenne garde à ce mot si propre à induire en erreur. Tout développement n’est pas un perfectionnement. Il n’est le plus souvent qu’un déployement d’une perfection égale, mais qui se rend plus extérieure en un temps que dans un autre. Il seroit ridicule par exemple de penser que le christianisme des apôtres étoit moins parfait que celui des sᵗˢ.

Perfectibility.—Let M. de B[onald] himself beware this word, so apt to lead astray. Not every development is an improvement. Most often it is merely the unfolding of a perfection that remains equal but makes itself more outward at one time than at another. It would be ridiculous, for example, to think that the Christianity of the apostles was less perfect than that of the saints.

Joubert’s notebooks return to the work of thinking and writing, the demands of friendship, and questions of faith, beauty and conduct. This edition pairs the French with a new English translation, preserving the order of the chosen source and the unfinished character of its fragments. Dates and source references allow readers to follow a thought through time or return to its printed context.
Historical Text and Translation
The French text follows André Beaunier’s 1938 edition of Les Carnets de Joseph Joubert, published by Gallimard from Joubert’s autograph manuscripts. Volume I presents the entries on printed pages 32–475. French and English are aligned paragraph by paragraph, retaining the source order, printed dates and page references so readers can return to the facsimile.
