Hyanthe · Original

Original English

Pretty, white Foole! why hast thou been Sulli'd with Teares, and not with Sin? 'Tis true: thy Teares, like Polish'd Skies, Are the Bright Rosials of thy Eyes, But such strange Fates doe them attend, As if thy Woes would never end. From Drops to Sighes they turn, and then Those sighes return to Drops agen: But whiles the Silver Torrent seeks Those Flowr's that watch it in thy Cheeks, The White and Red Hyanthe weares, Turn to Rose-water all her Teares.

Modern English

Pretty white innocent! Why have you Been sullied with tears, yet not with sin? Your tears, like polished skies, are bright, The rose-like jewels of your eyes. Yet such strange fates attend them still, It seems your woes will never end. From drops they turn to sighs, and then Those sighs return to drops again. But while the silver torrent seeks The flowers awaiting in your cheeks, Hyanthe's colours, white and red, Turn all her tears to water of roses.
