Questions for Study
These questions ask for evidence from particular passages. They do not presuppose that Vaughan’s promised achievement has been verified or that a single spiritual or material interpretation must govern the whole book.
Names and Knowledge
What would count as knowing the thing rather than knowing the word first matter? Compare the demand for encounter with the names and properties. Which descriptions narrow the range of possible meanings, and which multiply it?
Visible Lesson and Hidden Subject
At what point does Vaughan move from ordinary earth to another meaning of earth? Follow the return of creatures, seasonal change and the explicit qualification. What does the visible lesson establish before the hidden subject is named?
What the Poem Adds
How does the speaker revise his first view of Hyanthe? What is gained by reading the tears before the water testimony? Does Vaughan’s comparison explain every detail, or only establish a relation?
The Egg as a Test
Explain the egg example without importing modern chemical terminology. What capacity is lost in Vaughan’s destructive procedure, and why is a collection of separated elements insufficient to restore it?
Evidence and Withholding
How can the demand for demonstrable influences on pages 126–127 coexist with the withholding on page 112? What can a reader responsibly conclude when the offered grounds are partly testimonial?
Whose Work Is Transformation
Compare the sustaining spirit, soul and body and the practitioner’s cooperation. Which actions belong to God, Nature, the subject and the human worker? Where does Vaughan warn against confusing them?
An Interpretation with Its Limits
Choose one passage that supports a spiritual or ethical application. First describe its historical context; then state the proposed application and the evidence for it. Finally identify one feature of the passage that your interpretation does not explain.
Reading Beyond the First Ending
What changes when FINIS is followed by the book poem? Compare the claim to plain truth with the intimacy, wit and imagined audiences of the verse. What do the relevant printed corrections add to a reader’s awareness of a printed book?
