I asked him to explain what this was. He said that it was the salt of the macrocosm obtained through the salt of the microcosm, Bernard’s doubled Mercury, the highest and most fixed: two mercurial substances from one root, namely the world’s hyle. It could only be brought about in its own substance purified to the highest degree. There one desires the other as the magnet desires iron, or man woman. This was the philosophers’ Sun, Moon, Mercury; body, spirit, soul; salt, sulphur, Mercury. For from the earth of the microcosm Mercury is obtained, and through it the Mercury of the microcosm: both derive from one root, namely earth or mud. This is Bernard’s little spring, which he found in the field, sat down beside, and began to clean out. It comes from one root, namely hyle, the Spirit of the World. At the beginning, middle, and end only one thing is visible, yet there are three: the spirits of the microcosm and macrocosm—both from one root—which become salt, one obtained through the other. Even when united against their will, however, these remain dead. But when the ethereal spirit, the philosophical fire, intervenes—it shows itself openly in thunderstorms—they revive. It is caught by the other two, which are nevertheless one thing, like a mouse in a trap. These three are one thing, but not a dead thing, for the Spirit of the World is no dead thing. A living thing must always act. Therefore it rejoices in the fourth, as in the golden seed of each thing, which it causes to sprout, become green, and grow.

About This Reading Edition

The governing German witness is the complete 1682 collection in Badische Landesbibliothek Karlsruhe, shelfmark 87 B 76050, with an unnumbered title and printed pages 1–80. The historical title’s Arabic and Portuguese antecedents and its authorial persona are retained as claims, not authenticated originals. Johann Otto Helbig (Hellwig), Martin de Delle, J. J.
