The Concentrated Centre of Nature · Passage 8

English

Try this: for once begin with your whole heart, in God’s strength, to become devout. Do to others everything you wish them to do to you. Love those who hate you; bless those who curse you; do good to those who seek your ruin. Hate your flesh and everything that gratifies it. Still your unruly inward movement and draw it out of the raging circumference into the quiet, gentle centre. Then in your soul you will hear a soft, lovely whisper that will delight you beyond words and prevent your will from passing again out of the holy, sweet light into the sinful, sharp fire, or out of patience and contentment into pride, self-love, and love of the world. You will become an entirely different person and with tears before God repent of the time you spent in sensual pleasure and greed for honour and money. Every day, indeed every moment, you can contemplate God’s wondrous creatures and say: “Lord, I rejoice in the work of your hands.” In yourself alone you can observe enough of his omnipotence and great wisdom; you need not desire the philosophers’ stone, the master of nature, merely to obtain a sight of God’s incomprehensible works.

About This Reading Edition

Historical Text and Translation

The governing German witness is the complete 1682 collection in Badische Landesbibliothek Karlsruhe, shelfmark 87 B 76050, with an unnumbered title and printed pages 1–80.
