The Last Testament of a Father to His Beloved Son · Passage 11

German

[Zusammengesetztes Zeichen.]

English

The black circle of Saturn again signifies lead or Saturn, by which the sages always understand antimony. The hand beside it, emerging from heaven or the clouds, swears that this is the sages’ true and proper matter: not common lead, but, as stated, the sages’ lead, which is antimony. The Sun in the black circle indicates that gold must be dissolved in the butter of Saturn, that is, of antimony; for butter of antimony is the solvent of gold. In it the gold putrefies and becomes entirely black. The middle circle contains all this, because it is at once the sign of antimony and of the sages’ mercury, as appears when it is viewed by itself apart from the figure. [Combined sign.]

About This Reading Edition

The complete supplied German–English edition of the 1682 collection: the main treatise attributed to Ali Puli, Helbig’s preface, distinct companion discourses, the short potable-gold preparation and the anonymous Father’s Last Testament, with four historical figures, 103 annotations and the full Diotimos study apparatus.

Historical Text and Translation

The governing German witness is the complete 1682 collection in Badische Landesbibliothek Karlsruhe, shelfmark 87 B 76050, with an unnumbered title and printed pages 1–80. The historical title’s Arabic and Portuguese antecedents and its authorial persona are retained as claims, not authenticated originals. Johann Otto Helbig (Hellwig), Martin de Delle, J. J. F. and the anonymous testament retain their distinct historical roles.
