English

A cloth-shearer’s son; learned in a monastery at Verona; Eibingen, three miles from … in the monastery, with the canons regular for three-quarters of a year. There he worked quietly and told me nothing beyond what I was to know. I only had to attend to the fire with him at times, for then I did not know what universal, particular, or the Philosophers’ Stone meant. Meanwhile I travelled to the Grand Chancellor of Poland, who was dangerously ill with dropsy. In the meantime he instructed me how to conduct the work and gave a full account of the colours; I was to allow nobody near it. In the seventh week I saw signs, as I have left in writing. He said it was a tincture or universal medicine which his deceased sworn brother at Verona had entrusted to him in writing on his deathbed, after a solemn oath. He was to keep it secret until his own end.
