Philosophical Discourse · Passage 16
English
At the centre everything must remain closed, for there is only one first matter of all things. In a shock it divided itself into four qualities, into two spiritual and corporeal elements. The corporeal are the dwelling-house of the spiritual; the spiritual are the life and movement and life of the corporeal. Fire is the soul of air, and air is the spirit of water. Air gives all things their pleasantness and is coagulated water; water is dissolved, fluid earth. Without air there is neither movement nor life, whether in water or earth, because air alone is the movement of all things. Air itself is water made thin and rarefied, while water is compacted air.
