In conclusion I must say something about the congelation of the universal and metallic Stone. Very little will be found in the philosophers’ writings about their universal fire. This universal fire is natural, not a material fire from wood, coals, sulphur, oil, lime, dung, and the like. Whether Cabalistic or astral, from the upper or the lower, the universal matter is plain and simple, found everywhere by poor and rich alike. Few turn their thoughts to nature’s simplicity; from this arise all error and loss. God has placed everything within nature’s order, to which the human being must conform. If you act against nature, all evil springs from it. For example, much artifice is practised upon and with spirit of wine, but little is accomplished. It is all sophistical, or few patients can take it: it harms more than it helps. Conversely, if the true essence of wine is extracted by the simplest way, of itself, without violent distillation, it is so pleasantly sweet and well-tasting that a person can enjoy a fair-sized glass with great appetite and without harm, gladdening body and soul. Its preparation costs nothing, though time and an advantageous method affect the expense; still, no expense need be reckoned. Among all creatures this spirit of wine is most closely related to Cabalistic Mercury—that is, to the matter in question—and [is] the philosophers’ universal fire, cooking or ripening all creatures on earth.

About This Reading Edition
