The Concentrated Centre of Nature · Passage 17
English
When the matter in which the devil had been the centre and lord before the fall became sharp and caught fire, together with its powers and his powers or angels, through his excessively violent movement—by which he imagined he could raise his light to greater brilliance and make it equal to God’s light—and changed from the nature of light into darkness, light first became air, air became mist, and mist became slimy water. In its burning cold without light it would have coagulated further and harder had God not once again allowed a ray of his divine light to flow into its pure centre and through the whole matter, for the devil was no longer its centre. Through the radiance and sweetness of that light it awoke again like a dying person; the sharpness of its moving power was moderated, and it remained, like someone struck with fright, without further movement in the form of slimy water.
