There were with him two Wittenberg students: one, Nicolaus Clobes, a candidate in mathematics; the second, Jonas Agricola of Friburg; and a man from Zwickau, a wicked fellow. The others urged the Scot to ask for the secret of the medicine, in case he should again need to use it. He did so during the meal, but Sebastian strongly rebuked him, saying he need fear no further attack and should thank God and him. It was the Philosophers’ Stone; Sebastian admitted that transmutation of metals could be accomplished. At the student’s insistence he took a tin spoon, poured a little tincture into it, held it over the light, and rubbed it round the spoon with his finger. He gradually returned the tincture to the glass. As far as the tincture had touched the spoon, it had penetrated and transformed it into high-grade gold. The Scot again requested, if not disclosure, then at least a little of the tincture itself, to defend alchemy. But Sebastian Siebenfreund answered that his own body was sufficient testimony. He did, however, leave him the spoon.

About This Reading Edition

The complete supplied German–English edition of the 1682 collection: the main treatise attributed to Ali Puli, Helbig’s preface, distinct companion discourses, the short potable-gold preparation and the anonymous Father’s Last Testament, with four historical figures, 103 annotations and the full Diotimos study apparatus.

Historical Text and Translation

The governing German witness is the complete 1682 collection in Badische Landesbibliothek Karlsruhe, shelfmark 87 B 76050, with an unnumbered title and printed pages 1–80. The historical title’s Arabic and Portuguese antecedents and its authorial persona are retained as claims, not authenticated originals. Johann Otto Helbig (Hellwig), Martin de Delle, J. J. F. and the anonymous testament retain their distinct historical roles.
