Answer: God has ordained summer and winter, cold and warmth, Sun and Moon. Just as the precious fruits putrefy or open themselves in the earth through the cold of winter, so that they can afterwards multiply successively and finally become perfectly blessed through the alternation of time, months, day, and night, so minerals and metals in the earth have their God-appointed means—fire, air, water, earth—of blossoming and growing. Everything has its time. When it is summer upon the earth, it is winter within it, as miners know. If an artist wishes to coagulate a liquor of any kingdom, he must attend to the time: when the Sun passes through Cancer, or, if it is a metallic liquor, when the Sun passes through Capricorn. At that time the season and order of putrefaction of the great creature are present. Vegetables too have their time for being put in. He places them deep in the earth, two or three men’s heights down, covers them again with earth, and leaves them until perfection. In this natural fire he can congeal all liquors of vegetables and of perfect animal, mineral, and metallic substance. The artist does nothing here: God and nature do it. In this water I have seen plain water coagulated into the form of a very red powder; spirit of wine, olive-oil, turpentine-oil, and May dew. The business appears plain, but the secret is great.
