English

The business of Hermetic philosophy is divided into two parts: the upper and the lower. The upper is fire and air. In the fire is the Cabalistic Mercury; but Mercury produced the fire and is the root of the elements and of all creatures, the first mover, the highest secret in all nature. Through it God created and preserves all creatures, and through it he will renew, glorify, and clarify heaven and earth together with all creatures. Blessed is the person who possesses this divine secret. This is followed by the Spirit of the World of the Salt of Nature. When the sun is hottest, one can gather a blood-red salt; conversely, one can also collect an ice-cold fire, colder than ice in winter. The academics marvel at this, yet know as much of it as Nicodemus knew of rebirth. In his treatment of wind, Nebelius has published a little about it, only in passing. Wind, air, hail, snow, and rain are nothing other than the Salt of Nature; praise God, I can demonstrate all this in actual fact. Hermes’ lower is before the eyes of the whole world.

About This Reading Edition

The complete supplied German–English edition of the 1682 collection: the main treatise attributed to Ali Puli, Helbig’s preface, distinct companion discourses, the short potable-gold preparation and the anonymous Father’s Last Testament, with four historical figures, 103 annotations and the full Diotimos study apparatus.

Historical Text and Translation

The governing German witness is the complete 1682 collection in Badische Landesbibliothek Karlsruhe, shelfmark 87 B 76050, with an unnumbered title and printed pages 1–80. The historical title’s Arabic and Portuguese antecedents and its authorial persona are retained as claims, not authenticated originals. Johann Otto Helbig (Hellwig), Martin de Delle, J. J. F. and the anonymous testament retain their distinct historical roles.
