Candida Phoenix Philosophica: Editorial Note
p. 405Editorial note
Source, transcription and translation
The base text is the anonymous Candida Phoenix philosophica published at Frankfurt am Main by Christian Hermsdorff in 1680, as preserved in the Wellcome digitization b32993456 and its Internet Archive derivative. The witness contains the continuously paginated two-part work through p. 245 and fifteen unnumbered register pages. Its title and the verso motto count as the opening leaves of the printed sequence; the first proem begins on p. 3. No additional appendix appears in this copy.
The original-language text is a readable transcription checked against the facsimile. Long s, ligatures, and obsolete displayed umlauts are represented with ordinary Unicode characters. Words broken across lines or pages are joined. Running heads, catchwords, signatures, ornaments and page numerals are omitted from the running text. Historical spelling and the substantive alternation among German, Latin, French and Greek are retained; spacing, some capitalization, accents and punctuation are lightly regularized.
The English translation was newly prepared from the historical text. It preserves argumentative distinctions and qualifications while replacing long linked clauses with readable modern syntax where necessary. Scriptural citations are translated from the wording actually cited rather than silently substituted from one modern Bible. Notes identify conspicuous differences between a printed locator and the passage intended. The original side retains a consequential historical error when correction would otherwise conceal the reading of the chosen witness.
Comparison units divide both languages at matching semantic points. Their identifiers provide stable references across fixed-page and reflowable formats; the printed source locator can span more than one page. Editorial section labels used for navigation are distinguished from verified source headings in the outline. The original registers are documentary matter: their references describe the historical book, rather than the pagination of the new edition.
Technical words are interpreted locally. Mercury, Sulphur, Salt, spirit, water, nature, substance and subject are not assigned a single modern equivalent regardless of context. The glossary records the author’s explicit definitions and important contrasts. Personal initials, uncertain names and unresolved material identities are left visible, with explanatory restraint rather than invented expansion.
This reading edition is based on one digitized witness. It does not offer a collation of all surviving copies or a reconstruction of variant readings across editions. Historical examples, reports of cures and transmutations, and judgments about stones are presented as parts of the author’s argument. The explanatory apparatus identifies their evidential position without certifying them as modern experimental results.
