Gomesius salem enumerat inter ea quæ intempestivam libidinem provocare solent, Et salaciores fieri fœminas ob esum salis contendit. Venerem ideo dicunt ab Oceano ortam.

Unde tot in Veneta scortorum millia cur sunt? In promptu causa est, est Venus orta mari.

Et hinc fœta mater Salacea Oceani conjux, verbumque fortasse salax à sale effluxit. Mala Bacchica tantum olim in amoribus prævaluerunt, ut coronæ ex illis statuæ Bacchi ponerentur.

Cubebis in vino maceratis utuntur Indi orientales ad Venerem excitandum, & Surax radice Africani. Chinæ radix eundem effectus habet, talisq; herbæ meminit mag. nat. lib. 2. cap. 16. Baptista Porta ex India allatæ, cujus mentionem facit & Theophrastus.

Sed infinita his similia apud Rhasin, Matthiolum, Mizaldum, cæterosque medicos occurrunt, quorum ideo mentionem feci, ne quis imperitior in hos scopulos impingat, sed pro virili tanquam syrtes & cautes consulto effugiat.

Gómez counts salt among the things that commonly provoke untimely lust, and maintains that eating salt makes women more lustful. That, they say, is why Venus was born from the ocean.

Why are there so many thousands of whores in Venice? The reason is plain: Venus was born from the sea.

Hence too the fertile mother Salacia, Ocean’s wife; and perhaps the word salax, “lustful,” flowed from sal, “salt.” Bacchic apples once had such power in matters of love that wreaths made of them were placed on the statue of Bacchus.

The East Indians use cubebs steeped in wine to excite sexual desire, and the Africans use surax root. China root has the same effect; and Giambattista della Porta, in Natural Magic, book 2, chapter 16, mentions such a plant brought from India, which Theophrastus also mentions.

But countless things of this kind occur in Rhazes, Mattioli, Mizald and the other physicians. I have mentioned them so that an inexperienced person may not strike these rocks, but may deliberately steer clear of them, as far as he can, as he would shoals and reefs.

About This Reading Edition

Robert Burton’s Anatomy ranges across medicine, philosophy, poetry, religion, and everyday life in its inquiry into melancholy. This complete parallel edition pairs the 1651 English text with a close modern English rendering, preserving the three Partitions, Democritus Junior’s address to the reader, verse, and the historical index.

Historical Text and Translation

The historical text follows the sixth edition, printed at Oxford for Henry Cripps in 1651, using the McGill University Library copy. The supplied edition documents missing printed pages 98–99 supplied from another 1651 copy at the Bavarian State Library. Historical folio labels and their irregularities remain visible; web reader numbers identify reflowed passages and do not claim to reproduce PDF pagination.
