Subsection 3 Honourable Objects of Love
1651 English
426Though they flourish many times, such Hypocrites, such temporizing Foxes, and blear the worlds eys by flattery, bribery, dissembling their natures, or other mens weakness, that cannot so soon apprehend their tricks, yet in the end they will be discerned, and precipitated in a moment: surely, saith David, thou hast set them in slippery places, Psa. 37. 5. as so many Sejani, they will come down to the Gemonian scales; and as Eusebius in Ammianus, that was in such authority, ad jubendum Imperatorem, be cast down headlong on a sudden.
Or put case they escape, and rest unmasked to their lives end, yet after their death, their memory stinks as a snuffe of a candle put out, and those that durst not so much as mutter against them in their lives, will prosecute their name with Satyrs, Libels, and bitter imprecations, they shall malè audire in all succeeding ages, and be odious to the worlds end.
The Anatomy of Melancholy: Subsection 3 Honourable Objects of Love
p. 692Though such hypocrites, such opportunistic foxes, often flourish and blind the world through flattery, bribery, concealment of their character or the weakness of others who cannot quickly detect their tricks, they will eventually be exposed and thrown down in an instant. “Surely,” says David, “you have set them in slippery places,” Psalm 37:5. Like so many Sejanuses, they will come down to the Gemonian Steps; like Eusebius in Ammianus, whose authority extended “to giving orders to the emperor,” they will suddenly be hurled headlong down.
Or suppose they escape and remain unmasked to the end of their lives: after death their memory stinks like the smoking wick of a candle just put out. Those who dared not even mutter against them while they lived will attack their name with satires, libels and bitter curses. They will “be spoken ill of” in every succeeding age, and be hated until the world’s end.

Robert Burton’s Anatomy ranges across medicine, philosophy, poetry, religion, and everyday life in its inquiry into melancholy. This complete parallel edition pairs the 1651 English text with a close modern English rendering, preserving the three Partitions, Democritus Junior’s address to the reader, verse, and the historical index.
Historical Text and Translation
The historical text follows the sixth edition, printed at Oxford for Henry Cripps in 1651, using the McGill University Library copy. The supplied edition documents missing printed pages 98–99 supplied from another 1651 copy at the Bavarian State Library. Historical folio labels and their irregularities remain visible; web reader numbers identify reflowed passages and do not claim to reproduce PDF pagination.
