13305.Equivocations here means distinct senses of a word, not deceptive or evasive speech. The index distinguishes melancholy as a passing disposition from melancholy as an established disorder.

13306.Affections can mean emotions, bodily conditions or states. The entry compresses different discussions into one heading; sleeping and waking are states rather than emotions.

13307.The source prints 33. This conspicuously short locator is retained, as are other suspect numbers in the Table. Compare the separate entry on envy and malice, which directs the reader to 347; the intended number here remains to be established.

13308.Alkermes is the historical compound confection discussed among Burton’s remedies. Its name is retained. The Table summarizes his medical authorities and does not itself supply ingredients or doses.

13309.Alteratives were medicines intended to change an unhealthy bodily quality or humour. Averters, below, are treatments intended to draw or divert the offending humour away from the affected part.

The historical text follows the sixth edition, printed at Oxford for Henry Cripps in 1651, using the McGill University Library copy. The supplied edition documents missing printed pages 98–99 supplied from another 1651 copy at the Bavarian State Library. Historical folio labels and their irregularities remain visible; web reader numbers identify reflowed passages and do not claim to reproduce PDF pagination.
