Laurent, tu me fais mal!
The Girl with the Golden Eyes: Novella
p. 71“You must have noticed, if indeed you are capable of observing a moral fact, that woman loves the fop,” de Marsay resumed, answering Paul's declaration only with a look. “Do you know why women love fops? My friend, fops are the only men who take care of themselves. Now, to take too much care of oneself, is that not to say that one tends in oneself another's property? The man who does not belong to himself is precisely the man women relish. Love is essentially a thief. I do not speak to you of that excess of cleanliness of which they are mad. Find one who has become passionate about a careless man, even if he were a remarkable man? If the fact has occurred, we must put it down to the cravings of a pregnant woman, those mad ideas that pass through everyone's head. On the contrary, I have seen very remarkable people left flat because of their negligence. A fop who occupies himself with his person occupies himself with a foolish thing, with little things. And what is woman? A little thing, an assemblage of foolish things. With two words spoken into the air, does one not set her to work for four hours? She is certain that the fop will occupy himself with her, since he does not think of great things. She will never be neglected for glory, ambition, politics, art, those great public women who, for her, are rivals. Then fops have the courage to cover themselves with ridicule in order to please woman, and her heart is full of rewards for the man who is ridiculous through love. Finally, a fop can be a fop only if he has some reason to be one. It is women who give us that rank. The fop is the colonel of love; he has successes, he has his regiment of women to command! My dear fellow! in Paris, everything is known, and a man cannot be a fop there gratis. You who have only one woman, and who perhaps are right to have only one, try to play the fop?... you will not even become ridiculous; you will be dead. You would become a prejudice on two legs, one of those men inevitably condemned to do one single and identical thing. You would signify stupidity, as Monsieur de La Fayette signifies America; Monsieur de Talleyrand, diplomacy; Désaugiers, song; Monsieur de Ségur, romance. If they leave their genre, people no longer believe in the value of what they do. That is how we are in France, always sovereignly unjust! Monsieur de Talleyrand is perhaps a great financier, Monsieur de La Fayette a tyrant, and Désaugiers an administrator. You might have forty women the following year; not a single one would be granted to you publicly. Thus foppery, my friend Paul, is the sign of an incontestable power conquered over the female people. A man loved by several women is reputed to have superior qualities; and then each one wants to have him, the unfortunate man! But do you think it is nothing, too, to have the right to enter a salon, to look at everyone there from the height of one's cravat or through an eyeglass, and to be able to despise the most superior man if he wears an out-of-date waistcoat? Laurent, you are hurting me! After breakfast, Paul, we shall go to the Tuileries to see the adorable Girl with the Golden Eyes.”
When, after making an excellent meal, the two young men had paced the terrace of the Feuillants and the great avenue of the Tuileries, they nowhere met the sublime Paquita Valdès, on whose account fifty of the most elegant young men in Paris were there, all musked, high-cravatted, booted, spurred, flourishing riding crops, walking, talking, laughing, and consigning themselves to all the devils.
