Aphorismi Urbigerani: Reading Routes

p. 190

Reading Routes

Each route selects a question and a sequence of passages. The complete historical text remains the point of return; these connections supplement a continuous reading.

Read the Complete Volume

Begin with the frontispiece, its inscriptions, the title, the licence and the dedication. Follow the principal sequence through CI and its closing word. Continue with the companion title and address, all thirty-one aphorisms, the repeated motto and the entire postscript through the final closing word.

Definitions and Exclusions

Read first matter, finished metals, undetermined capacity, the two mercuries and a reversible preparation. Then read rejected vegetable explanations. Ask what each exclusion rules out and what it still leaves unnamed. Continue with the essay on determination.

Art and Natural Generation

Follow transformation with preservation, a prepared but natural mercury, the little and great worlds, creation’s language and generation according to kind. Distinguish a comparison with nature from an independently demonstrated result. Compare mercury and material claims.

How a Rule Claims to Test a Work

Read three possible causes of failure, clarity after separation, a claimed test of simple mercury, excessive feeding and essential and passing colours. Ask which conditions the author names and what evidence the book itself makes available to a reader. Continue with measure and attention.

The Lesser Work and Its Boundaries

Start with vegetable specification, then compare a mediating substance, the completed union, a limit upon its action and further determination. The medicinal promises remain historical claims. Read the essay on the lesser elixir alongside the complete passages.

Read the Ending Back Into the Image

Read the author’s statement about interpretation and his full explanation, then return to the engraving and each translated motto. Compare the result with the dedication’s account of faith and teaching and the essay on the end of the work.
