Editorial Note
Ancient Mystic Oriental Masonry
p. 85Editorial Note
Copy text and scope
The historical text follows R. Swinburne Clymer, Ancient Mystic Oriental Masonry: Its Teachings, Rules, Laws and Present Usages Which Govern the Order at the Present Day (Allentown, Pennsylvania: Philosophical Publishing Company, 1907), from the Internet Archive scan identified in Sources S1. The dedication, original introduction, degree narrative, main text, regulations, and original footnote material are included. Blank leaves, library marks, scanning artifacts, and the physical cover are omitted. The historical title-page emblem is reproduced from the same scan.
This is an annotated reading edition, not a facsimile or a stemmatic critical edition. Machine transcription was checked through a full reading and targeted comparison with the scan, including damaged pages and apparent textual anomalies. Obvious recognition errors and line-end word divisions have been repaired. Historical vocabulary, theological claims, spelling variants, and printed grammatical irregularities are generally retained. Paragraph flow, quotation spacing, headings, and note presentation have been regularized for reading. No modern reprint's introduction or editorial apparatus has been used as the historical text.
Page references and numbering
Small bracketed numbers, such as [65], locate the beginning of an original printed page in the reading text. They are reference markers, not page numbers of this edition. Where a word was divided across an original page break, the marker is placed at the reunited word. A marker for the unnumbered dedication is descriptive. The rules' preliminary notice begins on original p. 177, followed by the rules on pp. 179–193.
The main sequence repeats 78 and 79 near the beginning of the Foundation division, contains 149½ on p. 95, omits 191 after 190 on p. 113, omits 225 after 224 on p. 124, and prints 301 twice on p. 154. The rules have twenty-seven paragraphs: the one between 23 and 25 is printed 27 on p. 191, and the final paragraph is also 27. These labels have been preserved. Cite the original page along with a repeated number. The book's section headings and lists of degrees are distinguished typographically from that main sequence.
Original and editorial notes
New annotations appear as numbered footnotes. Footnote material from the 1907 volume begins with a label such as “Original notes on 1907 p. 65.” Multiple short original notes on the same page are grouped in their source order, retaining their asterisks or similar indicators. A native note reference is attached to the relevant page's passage; it is a reference to that page's note group, not an assertion that every item originally annotated the final word of the passage.
Original notes continued over pp. 65–66, 86–87, and 184–188 have been joined. The subsidiary note printed within the long note on p. 186 is identified in brackets at its end. Bracketed descriptive labels in the apparatus are editorial. This organization keeps all original note wording available without confusing it with the new commentary. Notes are native Word footnotes in DOCX, page footnotes in the PDF, linked notes with return links in EPUB, and standard Markdown footnotes in MD.
Visible omissions and errors
The source has an ellipsis in the Egyptian procession after “having some,” an ellipsis before “of Eleusis” in §249, concealed initials in Rule 14, and a dotted blank at the end of Rule 18. These have not been completed by conjecture. Apparent historical or bibliographical errors are retained and explained where relevant: for example, the incorrect Revelation reference in §71 and the contradictory dates in §145.
Several names and technical expressions have variant or awkward printed forms. The glossary explains their function without silently rewriting the author's historical argument. The original note naming “Schopenhauser” is identified editorially with Schopenhauer. An annotation that points out a problem should not be read as a claim that all other names, dates, quotations, or traditions in the volume have been independently verified.
Editorial approach
The annotations clarify vocabulary, locate scriptural allusions, identify the kind of argument being made, point out internal tensions, and compare a limited set of primary or institutional sources. They distinguish symbolic explanation from historical corroboration. The notes do not supply undisclosed rituals, reconstruct the Secret Code, or authenticate a concealed succession of teachers.
The introduction, essays, and glossary are new editorial material prepared with AI assistance for this edition in 2026. Source identifications and selected comparisons were checked against the references listed below. Many original quotations remain quotations as printed by Clymer, not newly collated transcriptions of Buck, Pike, Pierson, Oliver, or every other writer he cites. The source list states which materials were consulted directly and which are bibliographical pointers.
