How the original book is organized
The original has divisions and numbered statements rather than a consistent modern chapter scheme. The page ranges below refer to the 1907 printing, reproduced as small bracketed markers in this edition. Numbered references use Clymer's labels, including repetitions and omissions. These headings and summaries are editorial aids; they do not renumber the source.
Original dedication and introduction — pp. 5–16
The dedication thanks named supporters and a guiding teacher. The introduction presents Mystic Masonry, distinguishes ceremonial admission from inward initiation, quotes Buck on regeneration and knowledge, argues for universal brotherhood, and discusses self-conquest and women's spiritual capacity. Its final pages combine a claim of inward equality with a restriction on ceremonial membership.
Degrees of the Mystic Oriental Rite — pp. 17–23
A secret council after Hiram's death leads to Abdemon's manuscript and journey. The named degrees frame travel, preparation, soul pre-existence, emanation, and the attraction of spirit toward embodiment. A procession of Egyptian officers and Hermetic books closes the account; the author withholds the names of further degrees.
Mystic Masonry — pp. 24–63, §§1–77
§§1–22: the scope of the rite, claims about Atlantis and America, pyramids, sacred geometry, and astronomical interpretation. §§23–42: secrecy, qualification, symbolism, ancient wisdom, religious tolerance, and the relation of modern forms to ancient Mysteries. §§43–60: the triangle and square, Lost Word, ineffable Name, sacred sound, Kabalah, and scriptures. §§61–77: the builder and spiritual temple, respect across religions, Hiram as symbol, and comparative myths of death and renewal.
The Foundation of All Masonry and the Ancient Mysteries Are One — pp. 65–116, §§78–206
The opening account describes the African Brothers, compares degree lists, and claims continuation under changed forms; 78 and 79 recur. §§87–103: Prussian patronage, esoteric societies, hidden sciences, and proposed links among Essenes, Templars, Rosicrucians, and Swedish Masonry. §§104–134: resemblance among ancient institutions, the Wisdom Religion, spiritual hierarchy, and changing religious forms. §§135–179: persecution, secret societies, Comenius, disputed documents, and several Templar origin narratives; 149½ occurs. §§180–197: Gnosis, a Johannine transmission, and concealed succession; 191 is absent. §§198–206: divine unity, changing parts, graded intelligences, and human self-consciousness.
Masonic Symbolism and the Ancient Mysteries All Are One — pp. 117–174, §§207–357
§§207–226: religion, the age of philosophy and ceremony, moral law, tolerance, and the East; 225 is absent. §§227–260: light, sacred books, the Mysteries, Hiram, solar interpretation, darkness, and regeneration. §§261–293: qualification, fidelity, the cord, removal of shoes, thresholds, trials, circumambulation, silence, the right hand, illumination, and intrusting. §§294–323: investiture, the white garment and apron, three pillars, officers, the lodge as world, and the ladder; 301 occurs twice. §§324–348: the two Johns, solstices, point within a circle, and sacred generative symbolism. §§349–357: lesser and greater Mysteries, secrecy, priestly instruction, and concealed leadership.
Rules and Regulations — pp. 177–193
The preliminary notice dates adoption to 1906. Rules 1–9 set out brotherhood, charity, confidentiality, and relations among members. Rules 10–14 govern prior membership, recognition, G, written rituals, and qualification. Rules 15–23 govern officers, records, admission, warrants, separation, discipline, and visitation. The paragraph printed 27 on p. 191 occupies the place of Rule 24 and defines the Supreme Grand Lodge. Rules 25–27 concern tenure, succession, dispensations, archives, and accountability to higher teachers. There are twenty-seven rule paragraphs despite the duplicated label.
Further paths of study
For personal formation, connect the original introduction to §§61–67, 263, 288–290, and Rules 4–8. For the problem of evidence, compare §§35, 125, 158–166, 213, 245–247, and 342. For institutional authority, read §§27, 115–118, 152–154, and 357 beside Rules 14–27. The key-word essays and glossary provide shorter routes through the same material.
