Ancient Mystic Oriental Masonry

p. 7

The circle, the point, and generation

The point within a circle is interpreted cosmically, through the sun and the world, and generatively, through active and passive principles. The discussion seeks to separate sacred sexual imagery from an automatic judgment of indecency. It also compresses many cultures into one explanatory pattern. The pattern should be understood as the quoted writers' comparative framework, rather than assumed to be every community's own explanation. Read §§326–348. Related terms: phallus, cteis, lingam, yoni, polarity.

Continuity and descent

The book repeatedly identifies changed institutions as manifestations of an unchanged wisdom. Resemblance, secret transmission, renamed orders, and recovered documents all contribute to that account. Each presents a different evidentiary problem. Shared ideas can exist without shared membership; a ritual story can teach a descent without proving it; an old-looking charter needs a provenance. Section 342 even allows independent origins for similar symbols. Read §§78–206, 208, 213, 245–247, 342. Related terms: tradition, operative Masonry, Rosicrucians, Cologne Charter.
