Body disease and historical medicine · A Chymical Dictionary

At a Glance

The word. A destructive bodily condition described through a wolf comparison.

In the book. Vlcus æstiomenum is similarly described as an aposteme feeding upon its location.

A place to read. The historical definition below, 1650 dictionary, unnumbered definition page 21; facsimile PDF page 349.

Historical Definition

Esthionemus is a deeply corrupted abscess that feeds upon the whole member like a wolf.

Meaning

The description joins corruption with an image of feeding upon a member. “Like a wolf” expresses the destructive character attributed to the condition; it is not a separate identification of an animal or an ingredient. The entry does not name a cause or treatment.

Use in the Book

Vlcus æstiomenum is similarly described as an aposteme feeding upon its location. Dubelech instead names the cavity of an abscess. These comparisons help separate the condition’s destructive action from a location within it. They do not establish a particular modern diagnosis.

Places to Read

Dubelech. The cavity within a historical imposteme or abscess.

Vlcus æstiomenum. A destructive swelling described through its action on its site.
