Body disease and historical medicine · A Chymical Dictionary

At a Glance

The word. Medicines classified by stopping a bodily flow.

In the book. Constrictiva and Stiptica provide related categories of restraining or drying medicines.

Historical Definition

Congelativa are medicines that stop any flux.

Meaning

The defining property is the stopping of a flux, a flow or discharge. The entry gives no ingredients and makes no distinction among the different flows that another medical passage might discuss. Its broad wording should remain visible instead of being narrowed to one modern symptom.

Use in the Book

Constrictiva and Stiptica provide related categories of restraining or drying medicines. Repercussiva is also defined through driving back a flux. These are useful historical comparisons, but the dictionary does not say that every member of one class belongs to all the others.

Places to Read

Constrictiva. A surgical class defined through a styptic action.

Repercussiva. Medicines classified by their supposed action of driving a flow back.

Stiptica. A therapeutic class identified by drying.
