At a Glance

The word. Bodies placed beyond the ordinary natural order.

Historical Definition

Innaturalia are supernatural bodies.

Meaning

This very short definition combines two terms which should both remain visible: the things are bodies, and their status is supernatural. It does not say that they are simply imaginary, nor identify them with all the spirits named elsewhere. The headword establishes a category without listing its members.

Use in the Book

Incubus and Nymphæ have fuller definitions specifying actions or places. Nothing in this entry directs the reader to treat either as an example of Innaturalia. A proposed identification needs support from the passage being interpreted, rather than from the shared difficulty of the names.

Places to Read

Incubus. A spirit described through deceptive sexual experience during sleep.

Nymphæ. Embodied spirits or spiritual persons associated with water.
