Historical Definition
Ignis leonis is the element of fire itself.
Meaning
The definition supplies an explicit elemental identification. It does not name a particular furnace, fuel or medicinal preparation. “Itself” emphasises that the gloss directs the reader to the element rather than explaining the phrase through a separate product.
Use in the Book
Ignis Persicus is a burning ulcer, and Ignis pruinus adeptus is a prepared quintessence of vitriol. These neighbouring fire names have different subjects. Exact qualification is therefore essential: the shared opening Ignis does not make all three expressions refer to the same kind of thing.
