Salts solvents and liquid preparations · A Chymical Dictionary

At a Glance

In the book. Tartarum provides the broader material and bodily uses of tartar.

A place to read. The historical definition below, 1650 dictionary, unnumbered definition page 38; facsimile PDF page 366.

Historical Definition

Pruinum is the first kind of tartar.

Meaning

The entry gives an ordinal relation but does not enumerate the remaining kinds. First should remain visible without supplying an invented sequence.

Use in the Book

Tartarum provides the broader material and bodily uses of tartar. Pruina, despite its similar spelling, is separately equated with Ignis Persicus and should retain its own record.

Lephante is also called the first kind of tartar, or bole, and described as intermediate between stones and clay. That fuller entry is worth consulting, though Pruinum itself supplies only its place in the classification.

Places to Read

Pruina. A name for the hot, burning ulcer defined under Ignis Persicus.

Tartarum. A wine-vessel deposit whose name also serves for bodily stones or gravel.

Lephante. A tartar or bole placed between stone and clay.
