Historical Definition

Liquor herbarum is made from herbs that have been pounded, pressed and digested.

Meaning

The definition preserves a sequence of treatment: pounding, pressing and digestion. The resulting liquor is therefore named through the preparation of herbs, without limiting the entry to one species. None of the three actions should disappear into the vague equivalent herbal liquid.

Use in the Book

Digestio supplies a separate definition of digestion, while Menstruum names the liquor in which a subject may be dissolved or digested. These linked headings distinguish the operation, the medium and the prepared product.

Places to Read
