Historical Definition
Lephante, or Lephantes, is the first kind of tartar or bole, intermediate between stones and clay.
Meaning
The definition identifies an intermediate condition. Its material belongs neither simply to the hard category of stones nor simply to clay, but holds a middle position between them. The wording first kind does not supply the remainder of a classification or explain what ordering makes it first.
Use in the Book
Tartarum gives the broader range of tartar-language, including material in wine vessels and bodily stones or gravel. Lephante is a particular definition within that range, and should not be reduced automatically to the familiar residue of wine.
Places to Read
Tartarum. A wine-vessel deposit whose name also serves for bodily stones or gravel.
